June Chandler: „Hey, maybe you’ll marry Michael (Jackson)?“

In 1993 June Chandler felt very close to Michael Jackson, she „liked him enormously ... He was the kindest man she had ever met.1

June Chandler

My impression of June Chandler was that she wanted to be mistress of Neverland; that she was ordering the staff around as if she owned Neverland; that she wanted everything that went with it.“[…]

Joy Robson 2005. 2

(Joy Robson is another woman who also wanted Neverland and „everything that went with it.“)

„June was an attractive woman – the former model with long dark hair was so beautiful she could bring the traffic to a standstill.“

Joseph Walter Jackson, Michael Jacksons father. 3

In 1993, they effectively made accusations of „child abuse“ against Michael Jackson in a million-dollar civil lawsuit, American style. One of them is June Chandler. She is the ex-wife of screenwriter Evan Chandler and mother of the children Jordan and Lily Chandler. In 1992, June Chandler was the former wife of Evan Chandler. Evan Chandler was actually a dentist at that time, but he was trying to write screenplays and hoped to make a career in Hollywood.

[The Chandlers] wanted the same things from life – fine clothes, expensive cars, a beautiful home.“

Raymond Chandler, the brother. 4

Something must have gone wrong, because in 1985 the divorce from Evan Chandler followed. And June married Dave Schwartz, a millionaire with money problems, who rented out wrecked cars. A workaholic in baggy shirts and sneakers and owner of the „Rent-A-Wreck“ agency. 5, 6

1992. June Chandler entering the life of Michael Jackson

June Chandler is the mother of Jordan Chandler, born in 1980 in marriage with Evan Chandler, and mother of Lily Schwartz, born in 1988 in the marriage with Dave Schwartz. In 1992 June also separated from husband number two and entered the life of Michael Jackson. Back in 1984, June had already sought contact to Jackson. And she did it with more vehemence than other fans. Soon her efforts should pay off, which is quite literally to take. 7, 8 In 1992, Michael Jackson’s car broke down in Los Angeles near David Schwartz’s „Rent-a-Wreck“ car agency, which led to his first deal with the Chandlers: they made him promise to call their twelve-year-old son Jordan, a fan of the King of Pop. In return for the promise, Michael Jackson was to receive a wrecked car. Jackson, who is known for his kindness to fans, accepted the deal and continued his car ride. Later, his calls actually came to the household of June Chandler and at some point, June flew to Neverland with Michael, and took her children with her. Neverland was Jackson’s home in California, which he bought in 1988 and is eleven square miles in size. Michael Jackson is said to have created a beautiful place there, where animals, people, a cinema and merry-go-rounds found a home. In Neverland, however, everyone had fun and June also ended up in Michael Jackson’s bedroom like everyone else.

„And did you go into Michael Jackson’s bedroom?“
Yes.“
How many times do you think you went into Michael Jackson’s bedroom at Neverland?“
It stopped after maybe the tenth time[…]“
Were you dropping clothes off?“
Oh, I might have. I don’t recall.“

June Chandler under cross-examination 2005. 9

June Chandler in Neverland

Michael Jackson’s generous hospitality is historically documented. So, for June and her children, trips followed with the entire staff from Michael Jackson’s entourage. These were tours attended by cameramen, numerous fans of the King of Pop, security guards, managers, and everyone else. June Chandler enjoyed luxury hotels, Disneyland and Neverland on these trips. At the side of the King of Pop, she flew to Monaco for the World Music Award and dined with other royalties there. And so it happened that June Chandler felt very close to Michael Jackson and „liked him enormously„. For her, he was „the kindest man she had ever met.“ 10

This nice man also invited her into his enormous entourage for the upcoming world tour starting in August 1993: Singapore, Japan, Moscow, Mexico … The large Cascio family was also invited by Jackson, including his adolescent nephews, countless friends and families, Elizabeth Taylor and many others. 11 June traveled to shopping events and bought handbags alongside the generous King of Pop, who had to pay for all expenses. The bills she charged onto Michael Jackson’s credit card. 12

My impression of June Chandler was that she was a gold-digger.“
„Did you see her interact with Mr. Jackson?“
Yes.“
Did you feel she was trying to use Mr. Jackson?
Absolutely.“

Joy Robson 2005. 13

However, June’s ex-husbands, named Evan Chandler and Dave Schwartz, were not invited anywhere by Michael Jackson, not even to Neverland. All that remained for them was a headline in the National Enquirer:

MICHAEL JACKSON’S SECRET FAMILY – A MILLIONAIRE’S WIFE AND HER TWO KIDS […] The superstar has grown incredibly attached to June Chandler Schwartz […] Michael “adopted” June and her two children. […] „I consider you my own family,” he told June. “And I’ll look after you as if you were.”[…].

„National Enquirer“ 1993. 14

„That asshole [Michael] is destroying my business and my family!“

screamed Dave Schwartz, June Chandler’s soon to be ex-husband, who was left behind.

At that time, businessmen had already expressed their deepest condolences to David Schwartz about this article in the tabloid press over the loss of his wife and family. But when bank institutions also denied Schwartz creditworthiness due to the headline-grabbing „unstable family circumstances“, there is said to have been talk even at this early stage about a typically American lawsuit to claim damages against Michael Jackson. Because car dealer Schwartz suffered already „emotional damage“. A claim that is lucrative and popular especially in American courtrooms. 15 And it would not be long before David Schwartz, who was said to be in debt of about $5 million, unsuccessfully asked his still-wife June, who was in the process of divorcing him, to borrow about $4 million from Michael Jackson. 16

„But even though Michael was immediately attracted to her, it would never have occurred to him to break into a marriage.“

Joseph Walter Jackson about his son Michael. 17

And yet June Chandler is reported to have made the following statement to Michael Jackson:

„I’ve had males in my life that, you know, have disappointed me. How can I have you in my life and you’re saying that you’re going to take care of us, that you’re so wonderful, everything’s going to be okay, how am I going to do that?“

June Chandler, 2005. 18

He would love her, Michael Jackson is said to have told her. And, „Don’t worry, I’ll take care of you.“ And June felt Michael Jackson was „part of her life – definitely.“ „Incredibly kind!“ „The best man …“. 19, 20 At some point, Michael is reported to have given June a „love bracelet“ from Cartier. Later, he placed a box with a necklace and earrings in her house. On her bed. 21, 22 That was after he reportedly stayed with her from mid-April to late May. For maybe 20 times, 30 times or maybe 40 times. Jackson had brought his injuries with him. Perhaps not just those from his badly healing scalp surgery four weeks earlier. He also brought with him his addiction to painkillers at that time. 23, 24

“I thought I knew him and I was in the same house with him! […] That’s what Michael used to say: ‚I can’t tell anybody I have a headache because fifty people will bring me bottles of aspirin.‘ „And here I thought he’ll be here and it will be just a normal life in this little house in Santa Monica […]“

June Chandler. 25

„Hey, maybe you’ll marry Michael.“

Evan Chandler, June Chandler’s ex-husband. 26

Evan Chandler was still working on his screenwriting career in Hollywood at the time. 27 And it would not be long before Evan was heard on tape making the following threat:

Nobody in this world was allowed to come between this family of June, me and Jordy. […]That’s evil. That’s one reason why he’s evil. I spoke to him about it […] I even told him that […] Months ago. When I first met him I told him that. MR. SCHWARTZ: Yeah. MR. CHANDLER: That’s the law. That’s the first thing he knew. Nobody’s allowed to do that. Now there’s no family anymore.

Evan Chandler, July 1993. 28, 29

It is not known how long Michael Jackson, who is said to have never been keen on any conflicts, showed any interest at all in having June Chandler and her children accompany him on his world tour. In mid-1993, June Chandler experienced a hard landing after one of her last flights to Neverland: A still-debt-ridden husband offered no prospect of a financially carefree future, a raging ex-husband who owed her $60,000 in child support even less. And Michael Jackson was just getting ready to fly to the other end of the world. At some point, June Chandler had to learn that Michael Jackson would no longer take her with him.

Evan Chandler July 8th. 1993: „… if Michael loves […] Lisa…“

Around the timeframe May 1993 and possibly already the time before, Michael Jackson turned to another woman and began a relationship with her: his future wife Lisa-Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley. This is what Gary Hearne, Michael Jackson’s longtime chauffeur said about the romantic relationship between Michael Jackson and Lisa-Marie Presley beginning May 1993:

Q „Were they dating before that [their marriage in May 1994]?“
A: „Yes.“
Q „They were dating?“
A „Yes.“
Q „How long had they dated?“
A „Oh, it could have been a period over a year. I don’t remember.“
Q „That’s your best estimate?“
A „Yes. And how did you know — A I — just to be clear, they were long-time acquaintances.“
Q „And how did you know they were dating, though?“
A „Because I would take them out.“
Q „Take them out where?“
A „To dinner.“
Q „I thought he didn’t go to dinner much?
A „He didn’t much.“
Q „Okay. So where would you take them to dinner? A There was an Italian restaurant in Brentwood and a Chinese restaurant. I don’t remember all the places. A place near the Beverly Center. Various places.“
Q „Okay. How many times did you take them to restaurants together? Best estimate Your mike fell off.“
A „Oh — 12 to 15 times.“
Q „Alrighty. And take them anywhere else other than to restaurants?
A „Yes.“
Q „Where else?“
A „I don’t remember all the places. I remember that she was in the car quite often; that they were often together. I do recall taking them both to the Scientology building in Hollywood, one of their buildings.“
Q „On a date?“
A „I don’t know if you would call it a date.“
Q „And this is all before they got married, right?“
A „You know, some of this may have been after they got married.
Q „Okay. Well, before they got married, did you ever see them romantic with one another?“
A „Yes.“
Q „In which way?“
A „Sitting in the back seat of the car we were in.“
Q „Doing what?“
A „Kissing.
Q „How many times?
A „Once or twice.

Hearne, Gary, 2016, Michael Jackson’s longtime chauffeur. 30

And the July 1993 telephone conversation between Evan Chandler and Dave Schwartz began with the following words, which were recorded by a court of law:

„MR. CHANDLER: — discuss why it might be harmful. Suppose I’m right? I mean if Michael loves [tape irregularity] Lisa at least want to hear my opinion about why what’s going on could be potentially harmful? If you love somebody, you don’t want them to get hurt.
MR. SCHWARTZ: Do you want to talk it in front of Jordy, about that?
MR. CHANDLER: Huh?
MR. SCHWARTZ: Do you want to talk about that in front of Jordy?
MR. CHANDLER: Oh, yeah, absolutely. He has to be there …“

Evan Chandler Juli 1993 phone call to Dave Schwartz 31

So, the love and the relationship of Michael Jackson with Lisa (-Marie Presley) was already a topic in the Chandler family in July 1993? How do Evan Chandlers accusations of alleged child abuse then fit in? For June Chandler-Schwartz, the ex-model who expected from life „fine clothes, expensive cars, a beautiful home32, the journey to Neverland was over. It wouldn’t be long before June Chandler stopped protesting against allowing the phrase „child abuse“ to be used in a civil suit against Michael Jackson.
Worth: 30 million dollars.

  11. 1_Note: Jackson/Cascio (similar to James Barrie/Llewelyn Davies) The large families included the Barnes family, McCaulkin, Bhatti, Schleiter and many others, as of 1984 also the Cascio family. Dominice Cascio is husband to Connie, father of five children and was the manager of the Helmsley Palace Hotel, New York. Connie Cascio can be seen countless times over the decades with her children on Jackson’s side at official receptions of world leaders, at Christmas parties, shopping trips and as an escort on Jackson’s world tours. In the new millennium, Frank Cascio, one of the eldest sons became employed by Jackson as a „personal assistant.“ The Jackson/Cascio family relationship continues until 2009. The friendship is intense enough that Jackson vacuums and takes out the trash in the Cascio household. In this regard, the similarity to James Matthew Barrie’s „Adoption“ of Sylvia Llewelyn Davies‘ family and her five boys is striking.

  22. Deposition Hearne, Gary, Michael Jacksons longtime chauffeur in 2016, Robson v. MJJ Productions, INC.:“ $18,000 or A Something like that. Q Yeah. And I would assume that was probably the first time you ever spent that much on a piece of jewelry? A Yeah. Yeah. Q Okay. Had you ever been sent out to do something like that after that? Buy a very expensive piece of jewelry for someone? A No. No, I hadn’t. MR. STEINSAPIR: Before that or after that? THE WITNESS: Oh, you mean –BY MR. FINALDI: Q After that? A Oh, I don’t recall — oh, you mean a piece of jewelry? Q Yeah. A No, I don’t remember. Q You had been sent out to buy a watch for Mr. Chandler, correct? A I don’t remember that. Q Okay. Did anyone tell you why you were buying this expensive jewelry for Miss Chandler? A Well, that — I remember that specifically just because of the circumstances. I knew that Michael wanted to give presents, as he often did, so that didn’t surprise me. And he had actually — I remember that day that he was looking at a he had some magazine that had a Tiffany’s ad in it and it had a piece of jewelry, some kind of bobble that was quite expensive. And his original instruction was that I would go out and get one of those. And for some reason I was not able to do that. They might not have had it in stock or something. Q Okay. A But he was I think — as I recall, it seemed like they were about to take a trip or June was or something. I don’t know. But it was kind of like a special occasion. So he wanted to buy something really nice for her, apparently. And we went to the Century City Mall and the idea was that we would go in and he wanted to visit a jewelry store there. I don’t think he even had a particular store in mind, but he wanted to do that. And he got on a business call and he — he asked me to go in and just buy a piece of jewelry for her. And I knew what kind of price range he had in mind, so I found a jewelry store and took some time and found — there was a necklace and kind of a set of ruby items because I think it was more than the necklace. And to me, it was quite beautiful, and I thought, well, that would make a nice present. So I chose it. And I had — I must have had the credit card at that time to be able to pay for it right then and there. Q Yeah. A Because it — you know, that kind — kind of created a stir in the store that someone would just walk in and buy something like that that fast. Q Yeah. A So I bought it and took it back to the car and showed it to Mr. Jackson and he seemed to approve of it.“
  23. Hearne, Gary, Robson v. MJJ Productions, INC, „Q.: Okay. And there was a period of time where you brought Michael Jackson to the Chandler home to sleep at night, correct? A Correct. I assumed. Yeah, he spent the night. Q That was around mid February of 1993? A It could have been. I don’t recall the – – even the time of year. Q Okay. And it’s my understanding it was at least a month’s worth of nights in a row that you took him there, correct? 30 days? A I remember that was the — one of the headlines in the paper about that testimony. That’s why I remember the number. I think the question I was asked was my best estimate of the number of times. And I said it could have been 20, 40. I don’t — I didn’t know. I was working seven days a week and the days just kind of ran together.“ mjjr.net/docs/Deposition-Gary-Hearne-2016-09-02.pdf
  24. 1_Note: Jackson’s scalp surgeries from 1984 and the years after: During the mega success of his THRILLER album in 1984, Jackson suffered scalp burns while filming a commercial for the soft drink company Pepsi. The consequences of his injuries were increased scarring, surgery, hair loss and migraines. In March 1993, doctors advised him to undergo another operation: scarred skin of the scalp was cut open, a balloon was pushed underneath, and the scalp was stretched over the balloon in order to cut off the „leftover“ skin hoping that healthy scalp will emerge and the old injuries can be permanently removed in subsequent surgeries. The surgery was performed on Jackson in March 1993, while he was preparing for the second half of his DANGEROUS world tour. He did not have time for the healing process. „Unbearable pain“ the doctors treated with medication. Jackson fell into an addiction, which he fought with the help of his future second wife and nurse Deborah Rowe in his apartment shortly before the start of the world tour in August 1993. During the period of the evolving Chandler scandal, Jackson was additionally preoccupied with pain, medication, exhausting rehearsals for the world tour and filming for the movie project with the working title „Is this scary“, which he later completed in 1996 under the name MICHAEL JACKSONS GHOSTS. When Jackson spends alleged thirty days at June Chandler’s home in April/May 1993, the aftermath of his poorly healing surgery must be omnipresent. For June it meant a way out of the drab, middle-class apartment life she had tolerated as a young girl in New York. For Evan, it was simply the logical progression of his personality.
